He was married three times, first to Cora Busch, with whom he had one child, then to Deidre Doyle, and finally to Mary Mallison. His stage career began early, with a debut at the Court Theater in London in 1895. In 1905, he toured the United States alongside actress Viola Allen, showcasing his talent across the country.

A.E. Anson passed away on June 25, 1936, in Monrovia, California. His legacy includes a selection of film performances, and he was notably chosen by director Frank Capra to play the High Lama in Lost Horizon, a role he unfortunately could not fulfill due to his untimely death.
