Adolphe Engers

Adolphe Engers was an American actor best known for Terra Nova, Fate’s Plaything, and Er geht rechts – Sie geht links!. He was born on June 20, 1884, in Gulpen, Limburg, Netherlands, and passed away on December 8, 1945, in The Hague, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands.

Personal and Family Life

Engers began his acting career in Holland with his debut in the film “De Kroon der schande” in 1918. Following this, he worked mainly on German movie productions. In the 1930s, he expanded his talents as a playwright and novelist, creating works like the Indische Roman titled “Ardjoena” in 1936. He also offered acting lessons at the Conservatory of The Hague.

Career Challenges

At the start of World War II, Engers was part of the stage company De Komedianten. However, as a Jewish actor, he faced a ‘Berufsverbot’ (professional ban) from the Nazis, which limited his opportunities and forced him to go into hiding. During this period, he created his last film, “Moord in het modehuis,” in 1943. Although it was based on a popular detective story, the film was never released in cinemas, as the creator refused to portray the hero as a Nazi.

Despite the challenges he faced during the war, his artistic spirit remained strong, reflecting in his work and influence on future generations of actors and writers.
