Adoniran Barbosa was born as João Rubinato on August 6, 1910, in Valinhos, São Paulo, Brazil. He had a large family with six siblings and was the son of Emma Rubitano and Fernando. He had two marriages: first to Olga Rodrigues from 1936 to 1937, with whom he had a daughter named Maria Helena, and later to Matilde, starting their relationship in 1937 and staying together until his death.
