Born William Henry Akerman May on November 12, 1869, in Pancras, London, England, he was the son of William Henry May and Mary Jane Ackerman. He had two marriages; his first was to actress Elizabeth Alice Groves, also known as Elsie Egerton, but they divorced in 1898. He later married Ella Bertha Saunders in 1901 and remained with her until his death in 1933.
