Al Bowlly

Al Bowlly was an African-born American actor who is best known for his roles in Ready Player One, The Jacket, and The Outsider. He was a popular crooner and lead vocalist with the Ray Noble Orchestra.

Personal and Family Life

Al Bowlly was born on January 7, 1899, in Delagoa Bay, which is now known as Maputo Bay in Mozambique. He was married to Margaret Fairless from December 18, 1934, until his death in 1941, and previously married to Freda Roberts from December 18, 1931, until their divorce in January 1934. He had a diverse early career, including working odd jobs in South Africa as a barber and a jockey before pursuing music.

Career Achievements

Bowlly gained fame in the 1930s, signifying his talent through two notable contracts: one with Roy Fox in 1931 and another with Ray Noble in 1930. His unique voice and style led many to believe that he could have matched the success of contemporaries like Bing Crosby had he not died during World War II. His music continued to influence artists, notably being sampled in contemporary projects.

Death and Legacy

Tragically, Al Bowlly was killed during a German air raid in London on April 17, 1941. He had performed the night before and chose to return home instead of staying overnight. A Luftwaffe bomb struck his flat, leading to his untimely death. He was buried in a mass grave with other victims, remembered as a talented artist whose life was cut short too soon.
