He moved to Los Angeles in 1946, where he attended Franklin High School and later Los Angeles City College. He was married three times and had three sons: Adam, Matthew, and Anthony Arkin. His last marriage was to Suzanne Newlander Arkin, which lasted from 1999 until his passing in 2023.
