Alan Haines was born on June 6, 1924, in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. He studied at the Hedley Goodall School in Bristol and began his acting career in radio for the BBC. He served four years in the Navy before making his professional debut in 1946. He was married to Dorit Welles from December 6, 1952, until her death on September 26, 2010.

Haines had a long career in theatre, performing in ten shows in the West End and various touring productions. Over his career, he worked alongside many prominent UK artists but notably did not work with Laurence Olivier or John Gielgud. His film and television work began with a short film for Edgar Lusgarden and included notable appearances in series like Softly Softly and Dad’s Army.
