He later married Natalie Parker Ewing and, shortly before his death, married Elizabeth L. Arment. He was also the stepfather of actress Patricia Ellis. His parents were Alexander Tompkins Leftwich and Rosalie Vivian Lightfoot.

Leftwich was a former New York stage director before transitioning to film.
