Personal and Family Life
Alfred Jentoft Maurstad was born on July 26, 1896, in Nordfjord, Norway. He was married twice, first to Tordis Maurstad with whom he had one child, and later to Gro Scott-Ruud, with whom he had two children. He was known for his warm personality and often visited his hometown of Bryggja, where he was considered a local hero. Alfred was also an accomplished musician, particularly skilled in playing the Hardingfele, a traditional Norwegian violin.
Career
Alfred began his acting journey at the Det Norske Teater in 1920 and quickly rose to fame as one of Norway’s finest character actors. He earned acclaim for his portrayals of significant roles, such as “Peer Gynt” from Henrik Ibsen and “James Tyrone” from Eugene O’Neill. His notable films included Fant (1937) and Gjest Baardsen (1939), establishing him as a leading star in Norwegian cinema. In recognition of his contributions to music, film, and theatre, he was knighted by the king with the order of St. Olav in 1957.
Death and Legacy
Alfred Maurstad passed away on September 5, 1967, in Oslo, Norway. His legacy lives on through his impactful performances in theater and film, as well as his contributions to Norwegian music. He is buried in Vestre gravlund in Oslo. Through his work, he has remained a beloved figure in Norwegian arts and culture.
