Alison Skipworth was born Alison Mary Elliott Margaret Groom on July 25, 1863, in London, England. She came from a family of means, being the daughter of a physician. In 1882, she married artist Frank Markham Skipworth, who became her favorite model. Despite her early beauty, Alison did not pursue acting professionally until later in life, debuting at the age of thirty-one.
Career
Skipworth began her acting career in London, initially appearing in “A Gaiety Girl” at the Daly Theatre in 1894. She eventually moved to Broadway where she had opportunities in various productions, including Shakespearean roles. When her stage performances began to dwindle in the 1920s, she transitioned to film, finding success with comedic roles where she often portrayed strong female characters. Her memorable performances were particularly noted in films alongside W.C. Fields.
Death and Legacy
