Born on January 21, 1934, in Abilene, Texas, Ann Wedgeworth was the daughter of Cortus and Martha Elizabeth Wedgeworth. She attended high school in Dallas and graduated from the University of Texas in 1957. Wedgeworth was married twice; her first marriage was to actor Rip Torn in 1955, with whom she had a daughter, Danae Torn. Her second marriage was to Ernest Martin, lasting until her death in 2017, and they had a daughter named Dianna Martin.

Wedgeworth joined the cast of Three’s Company as Lana Shields in 1979, a character that was assertive and often clashed with the show’s comedy style.
