Anthony May was born on May 23, 1946, in Reigate, Surrey, England. He was married twice; first to Charlotte Panton, with whom he had two children, and later to Vanessa Pett in 1992, with whom he had two more children. He remained with Vanessa until his death in December 2021.

May trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (R.A.D.A.) and had a successful career on stage and screen. He performed in many plays, including works by Shakespeare, and had notable appearances in films like Isadora and Murder by Decree.
