Arthur Playfair was the son of Archibald Lewis Playfair and Isabella Ord. He had two marriages; first to Lena [Margaret] Ashwell, an actress and manager, from 1896 to 1908 before they divorced. Later, he married Laurie Stevens in 1912, and they had three children together before her death in 1917. He was also related to actors Nigel Playfair and Giles Playfair and fathered the actress Joan Playfair.
