Athan Karras was an American actor, best known for his roles in “Crime Killer,” “Dark Odyssey,” and “Nomads.” He was born on September 22, 1927, in Thessaloniki, Greece, and passed away on February 12, 2010, in Tarzana, California.

Personal and Family Life

Athan Karras was deeply connected to his Greek heritage. He performed with the Parthenon Dancers, a leading Greek Folk Dance troupe, before moving to the United States. Karras introduced Greek folkdance to American audiences and owned a café called The Intersection, where he taught Greek dancing and hosted various ethnic dances.

Career

Karras was also involved with several organizations related to Greek dance, including the Dora Stratou Greek Dance Theatre and the AMAN Folk Ensemble. He served as an advisor and director for the Folk Dance Programs of the California Traditional Musical Society, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions. His dedication to preserving and promoting Greek culture made a significant impact on the community.

Death and Legacy

Athan Karras underwent coronary bypass surgery in early 2010. He sadly passed away at the age of 82, surrounded by family in his home. Karras is remembered for his folk dance legacy, having inspired and taught thousands throughout his life, including his grandson, actor Lowell Byers.
