Bernard Atha was involved in local politics and served as the Lord Mayor of Leeds from May 2000 to May 2001. He worked as a local councillor on Leeds City Council and was the chairman of the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds. Additionally, he taught law at Huddersfield Technical College.
