Billy Wells was born on December 7, 1931, in Menominee, Michigan, and was the adopted son of John and Dorothy Wells. He had a brief acting career, appearing in several television shows but found greater success as a sportsman and musician. Wells was married to Beverly Chappelle and had three children.
Career
Before becoming an actor, Billy was a talented athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and track. He played for the Michigan State Spartans and was instrumental in their 1954 Rose Bowl victory against UCLA. Later, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins and also played for other NFL teams including the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Wells additionally led a Dixieland band called Billy and His Bachelors before he started his acting career.
