He had at least one sibling and later moved with his family to a cattle ranch in Montana. He married Mary Elizabeth Van Dusen around 1915 and they had one daughter named Marian Patricia Fleming, born on September 14, 1919. Although he suffered from a foot injury that caused a limp, he became known for his exceptional horsemanship skills.
