Bricktop was an American actress who is best known for her roles in Zelig, Honeybaby, Honeybaby, and Chasing a Rainbow: The Life of Josephine Baker.

Personal and Family Life

Bricktop was born on August 14, 1894, in Alderson, West Virginia. She married Peter DuConge in December 1929, but the couple separated a few years later. She began her performance career early, taking the stage at just 16 years old in Chicago’s finest clubs.

Career

Her big break came when she was invited to Paris in 1924 to perform at Eugene Bullard’s Le Grand Duc. She later sang at Barron’s Exclusive Club in New York, sharing the stage with notable performers like Frankie Fay, Al Jolson, and Lucille LeSueur, who became known as Joan Crawford. Throughout her career, Bricktop also collaborated with famous dancer Bill “Mr. Bojangles” Robinson.

Death and Legacy

Bricktop died on January 30, 1984, in New York City. She left behind a legacy in the entertainment world, having performed for decades across various major cities. Her contributions to theater and music continue to be remembered and celebrated.
