Buddy was married to Gerti Wiedner from 1964 until his death, and they had two sons, Patrick and Oliver Elias. He was the last living relative of Anne Frank and served as the chairman of the Anne Frank Foundation.

Elias began his acting training at the conservatory in Basel and completed it under Ernst Ginsberg in Zurich. He gained fame as a comedian in the “Holiday on Ice” show from 1947 to 1961.
