Burr McIntosh was an American actor who is best known for his roles in Way Down East, Lilac Time, and The Richest Girl in the World.

Personal and Family Life

Born William Burr McIntosh on August 21, 1862, in Wellsville, Ohio, he was the son of William Ambrose, the president of a public utility and the Cleveland Gas Coal Company. He studied at Lafayette College in Princeton, where he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity in 1884. Burr married Mrs. Jean Snowden Luther on December 24, 1914, but the couple divorced in 1929.

Career

Burr McIntosh began his career on the Broadway stage, with a notable role in the play Trilby in 1905. He transitioned to film, with his first major role as Jo Vernon in In Mizzoura (1914). He gained fame for his character Squire Bartlett in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East (1920) alongside Lillian Gish and continued to appear in early talkies until his final film in 1934. Burr was also involved in various creative endeavors, including publishing a magazine and working as a lecturer.

Death and Legacy

Burr McIntosh passed away on April 28, 1942, from a heart attack in Hollywood, California, at the age of 80. His contributions to theater and film remain significant, especially in the era of early cinema.
