His nephew, Michael Ballhaus, is a well-known director of photography.

Balhaus was trained at the acting school of the Deutschen Theater in Berlin and joined the ensemble of the Volksbühne from 1926 to 1935. His career peaked in the early 1930s, with significant roles in films, particularly the anti-war movie “Westfront 1918” in 1930. However, his leftist political views affected his opportunities during the Nazi regime, leading him to focus more on theatre in the latter part of the 1930s.

Carl Balhaus tragically passed away on July 28, 1968, in a car accident in Eisenach, which was then part of the German Democratic Republic.
