Carlyle Blackwell was an American actor best known for his roles in films like “Bulldog Drummond,” “The Ocean Waif,” and “His Brother’s Wife.” He was a popular matinee idol during the silent film era and had a thriving career in both the U.S. and Europe.
Personal and Family Life
Carlyle Blackwell was born on January 20, 1884, in Troy, Pennsylvania. He had a series of marriages, including to Victoria Ann Enoch, his last wife, from 1948 until his death in 1955. He was also the father of screen actor Carlyle Blackwell Jr.
Career
Entering films in 1909 with Vitagraph, Carlyle quickly rose to fame as a romantic lead in silent films. He made his mark as the first actor to play Bulldog Drummond in a 1922 co-production. His decision to stay in England during the late 1920s proved beneficial as his career flourished until the advent of sound, which ultimately ended his roles as a leading man.
Death and Legacy
Carlyle Blackwell passed away on June 17, 1955, in Miami, Florida, due to a heart attack. He left behind a legacy as one of the last silent film stars, having played notable roles, including Sherlock Holmes in “The Hound of the Baskervilles” (1929).
