She was the daughter of Judge Charles Carroll McComas, a descendant of Charles Carroll, who signed the Declaration of Independence, and Alice Moore McComas, a writer, actress, and suffragist. Carroll was married twice: first to cartoonist Walter Enright from 1922 to 1928, and then to Selskar M. Gunn from 1933 until his death in 1944.
