Cecile’s parents divorced when she was young, and after her mother remarried, the family lived in Missouri and Texas. She began her career as a chorus girl, becoming part of the Ziegfeld Follies. In 1918, she married director Frank “Duke” Reynolds but left the film industry after only two years. She later relocated to Shanghai, China, where she worked as a stenographer.
