Chacrinha was born on September 30, 1917, in Surubim, Pernambuco, Brazil. He was married to Florinda Barbosa from 1947 until his death in 1988, and they had three children together. His children include Leleco Barbosa, Jorge Abelardo Barbosa, and José Renato Barbosa de Medeiros, and he was a grandfather to Alexandre.
