Charlie Hill was born on July 6, 1951, in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from West De Pere High School in 1969 and studied speech and drama at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to Hollywood to pursue a career in comedy. He was married to Lenora Hatathlie in 1980, and together they had four children: daughters Dine’ Nizhoni, Nasbah, Nanabah, and son Nabahe.

He was a member of the Broom Street Theater Group and toured Europe with the La MaMa Experimental Theater Group.
