Bummerstaedt began his film career in 1924 with a significant role in the German film Zur Chronik von Grieshuus, marking the start of his regular appearances in cinema. He gained further recognition for his portrayal of the prince in the 1927 film Die Hose and for playing Max Piccolomini in a two-part adaptation of Wallenstein. His acting career slowed down towards the end of the 1920s, with his last film appearance being in 1932.
