Clarke made his Broadway debut in 1938 and went on to appear in many productions including ‘Abe Lincoln in Illinois’ with Raymond Massey. His career also included roles in numerous classic films and television series, where he was frequently recognized for his performances. Notably, he played opposite Katharine Hepburn early in his career, maintaining professionalism even when stung by a bee during a live performance.
