David Dinkins

David Dinkins was an American politician, lawyer, and author who served as the 106th Mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1993. He was the first African American to hold this office.

David Dinkins was born on July 10, 1927, in Trenton, New Jersey. He was married to Joyce Dinkins for 67 years, from August 30, 1953, until her death on October 11, 2020. Together, they had two children, including David Dinkins Jr., and he had two grandchildren. Dinkins was also a dedicated member of Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.

Early Life and Education

Before his political career, Dinkins served in the Montford Point Marines, who were the first African American U.S. Marines. He graduated cum laude from Howard University and earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956. He began his political journey in 1966 by serving in the State Assembly and eventually became the borough president of Manhattan.

Death and Legacy

David Dinkins passed away on November 23, 2020, in Manhattan, New York City, just a few weeks after the death of his wife. He was remembered for his significant contributions to New York City, particularly for reducing crime during his time as mayor.
