He was a third-generation Kansan and showed a strong academic background, being Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Kansas. Smith was also involved in the arts from a young age, acting and directing various shows throughout his life.

Smith’s career spanned numerous roles in theater, radio, and film. He was the impresario of the General Motors Symphony of the Air radio show during the 1930s and later performed in various opera companies. He moved on to work on Broadway, in London, and in several Hollywood productions, showcasing his versatile talent in both acting and directing.
