He was the proud father of Randy Cross, a former NFL player and sports commentator. Throughout his life, Dennis remained a lifelong conservative Republican and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Dennis served in the United States Military during World War II before he began acting. He was discovered by the famous comedy team Abbott and Costello while dining during a studio tour.
