Desmond Llewelyn was born to Ivor and Mia Llewelyn. He married Pamela Mary Pantlin in 1938, and they had two children together. Despite facing early resistance from his family regarding his acting career, Llewelyn persevered and succeeded in his passion.

His acting career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a second lieutenant in the British Army. He was captured by German forces and spent five years as a prisoner of war.
