Dick Dana was an American actor who is best known for Top Banana, The Colgate Comedy Hour, and Doodles Weaver.

Personal and Family Life

Dick Dana was born Samuel Critcherson on December 8, 1900, in New York City. He was the son of William Dana Critcherson and Emma Davis, who had a background in the Boston Opera Ideal Co. He married Cicely B. Fehrenback from London, England, in November 1924. They had one son and later became grandparents, one of whom is Doug Kennedy.

Career

After spending some time in Great Britain, Dana returned to the United States in 1919 to work as a singer and entertainer for the YMCA’s Over There Theater League. He began performing in vaudeville in 1921, featuring in various shows such as Bombo and Lady Be Good. In the early 1940s, he changed his stage name to Dick Dana and became well known in vaudeville and later performed in the Broadway hit, Top Banana, in 1952.

Death and Legacy

Dick Dana passed away on July 10, 1976, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He left behind a legacy as a performer who transitioned through various entertainment styles, including vaudeville and legitimate theater. His contributions to the field are remembered through his performances and the work he inspired in future entertainers.
