Don Herbert

Don Herbert was an American actor who is best known for Mr. Wizard’s World, Scarecrows, and Watch Mr. Wizard. He was also a writer and educator during his career.

Personal and Family Life

Don Herbert was born on July 10, 1917, in Waconia, Minnesota. He was married twice, first to Maraleita Dutton, with whom he had three children, and then to Norma Herbert from December 1, 1972, until his passing in 2007. He graduated from LaCrosse State Teacher’s College in 1940, obtaining degrees in English and General Science.

Career

Before gaining fame as Mr. Wizard, Herbert worked in various roles, including acting and radio writing. He created the educational television show “Watch Mr. Wizard,” which premiered in Chicago on NBC in 1951. This show aimed to engage children in science and earned a Peabody Award in 1954, highlighting its impact on education.

Death and Legacy

Don Herbert passed away on June 12, 2007, in Bell Canyon, California, due to bone cancer. He is fondly remembered for his contributions to children’s education through science, his innovative television work, and his military service during World War II, where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross.
