He had a strong background in classical training and began his acting career on the Broadway stage in the play “The Last Enemy” in 1930. Later, he became associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Eccles made a significant transition to film starting in 1960, gaining recognition for his performances. He appeared as Nerva in the 1968 series “The Caesars” and later portrayed Pollio in the 1976 production “I Claudius.” His distinctive character roles and classical training set him apart in British cinema and television.
