Donald Adam May was born on February 22, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. He had a total of four siblings and was the son of Harry Stuart May, a Texan oil businessman, and Leontine Frances Torczynski. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Donald was married twice; first to Ellen Cameron from 1951 to 1984, with whom he had two children, and later to Carla Borelli until his death.

May began his acting career in a stock theater company and later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He returned to acting in New York, where he landed the role of a cadet in the CBS series West Point in 1956.
