Dorothy was the only child of Frank Bromiley and Ada Winifred (née Thornton). She had a significant personal life, marrying Joseph Losey on June 16, 1956, with whom she had a son named Joshua Losey in 1957. After their divorce in December 1963, she began living with Brian Phelan and later had a daughter named Kate in 1967. In 1966, she changed her name by deed poll to Dorothy Bromiley Phelan.

Career

Dorothy trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and taught at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) between 1966 and 1972. Throughout her career, she appeared in various television plays and films, making a significant impact in the British entertainment industry.
