Born Robert H. Friedrich on June 30, 1890, in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, he later adopted the ring name Ed “Strangler” Lewis. He earned an athletic scholarship to Louisville University, where he participated in baseball. Apart from wrestling, he also played professional minor league baseball.
Death and Legacy
Ed Lewis passed away on August 7, 1966, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was recognized for his contributions to the sport of wrestling and was inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002. His innovative headlock move was a testament to his deep understanding of anatomy and sports science.
