He was married three times, first to Hanna Axmann-Rezzori and later to Ann Katherine Winterburn, with whom he had three children. He had two siblings, Scott Brady and Lawrence Tierney, and was related to Terence Tierney, his niece or nephew.

Edward Tierney passed away on December 18, 1983, in Orange, California, due to diabetic shock. His contribution to film and television, including several German movies, left a lasting impact.
