He was married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth Heagerty in 1926 until her death in 1943, and later to Margery Luxem Railton from 1947 until his own death in 1976. He had two children with Railton.

Ernie Nevers was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, inducted in 1963, and is remembered for his remarkable performance as a fullback for the Duluth Eskimos and the Chicago Cardinals.
