Personal and Family Life

Ernst Deutsch was married to Anuschka Fuchs, and they remained together until his death on March 22, 1969. After World War II, he returned to Vienna but settled in Berlin starting in 1951. His Jewish heritage forced him to leave Germany in 1933, prompting a series of relocations throughout Europe before he eventually immigrated to the United States.

Career

Deutsch had a remarkable career as a character actor, often recognized for his intense and dramatic performances. He began acting on stage in 1914 at the Wiener Volksbuehne and later performed at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin under the esteemed director Max Reinhardt. During the 1950s and 60s, he continued to take on character roles, often portraying older characters with white hair.

Death and Legacy

Ernst Deutsch passed away from a heart attack on March 22, 1969, in West Berlin, West Germany. His work in film and theatre has left a lasting impact, especially given the challenges he faced due to his Jewish roots during the rise of the Nazi regime. His legacy is preserved through his performances, which continue to be appreciated by audiences today.
