Ernst Winar

Ernst Winar was a Dutch actor who is best known for his roles in silent films such as “Majoor Frans,” “Gloria Transita,” and “Een Carmen van het Noorden.” He was also a film director with significant contributions to Dutch cinema from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Born Wilhelm Joseph Carl von Eichhoff on September 3, 1894, in Leiden, Netherlands, Ernst Winar came from a German family. He studied engineering briefly in Germany but left due to World War I. He was married to actress Colette Brettel, and they often worked together in films.

Career

Winar began his acting career by taking small roles in Dutch silent films starting in 1916. By the 1920s, he was acting in German films and later moved on to directing. He directed several notable films, including “Der Mann im Hintergrund,” and is remembered for co-directing “De Kribbebijter” in 1935, which helped shape the emerging Dutch film industry.

Death and Legacy

Ernst Winar passed away on June 28, 1978, in Leiden at the age of 83. He left behind a rich legacy in Dutch and German cinema and was noted for mentoring young filmmakers, including Paul Verhoeven, in the 1960s.
