Born on August 17, 1936, on the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Westerman was a Dakota Sioux Indian. He was married to Rosie and had five children. Throughout his life, he was known for his efforts to advocate for Native American rights and culture.

Career

Westerman made his film debut in Renegades in 1989. He achieved fame for his portrayal of Ten Bears in Dances with Wolves (1990), showcasing his strong acting skills and commitment to Native American representation in film. In addition to acting, he was a singer and songwriter, using his music to promote the American Indian Movement.
