Frances Horwich was an American actress best known for her role as Miss Frances in the educational children’s program “Ding Dong School.” Born on July 16, 1907, in Ottawa, Ohio, she became a prominent figure in children’s television until her passing on July 22, 2001.

Frances Horwich, whose birth name was Frances Rappaport, earned a Master’s degree in education from Columbia University and a doctorate from Northwestern University. She married Harvey L. Horwich in 1931, and they remained together until his death in the 1970s. Despite her deep love for children, she never had any children of her own.

Horwich was a pioneer in educational television and hosted one of the first programs designed for children, “Ding Dong School,” starting in 1952. She was known for her strong principles, prioritizing education over commercial interests, and resigned from NBC in protest of the network’s shift towards more commercial content. She continued to syndicate “Ding Dong School” until 1965 after it was canceled.

Frances Horwich passed away due to congestive heart failure on July 22, 2001, in Scottsdale, Arizona.
