Francis Matthews

Francis Matthews was an English actor who is best known for his voice role as Captain Scarlet and for playing the suave detective Paul Temple in the 1960s BBC television series.

Francis Matthews was born on September 2, 1927, in York, England. He attended St Georges School in York and later St Michaels Jesuit College in Leeds. He worked in theatre before serving in the Royal Navy. In 1963, he married actress Angela Browne, and they had three sons together.

Career

Matthews gained fame for his work in television and film, particularly as the voice of Captain Scarlet in Gerry Anderson’s series. He appeared in several British horror films in the 1960s, including “Dracula: Prince of Darkness” and “Rasputin: The Mad Monk.” His talent was recognized internationally when he received an award in Italy as the country’s second most popular actor in 1975.
