Frankie Crocker

Frankie Crocker was an American disc jockey and actor who is best known for his roles in Cleopatra Jones, Death Drug, and Spider-Man.

Personal and Family Life

Frankie Crocker was born on December 18, 1940, in Buffalo, New York. He did not have any children and was known for his vibrant personality on the air. His parents were Frances Crocker. Though he achieved great fame in broadcasting, he kept much of his personal life private.

Career

Crocker began his career in radio in Buffalo and quickly made a name for himself at WMCA-AM and WWRL-AM in New York City. He was a prominent figure in the late 60s to early 80s and conceived the “Urban Contemporary” format while serving as Program Director for WBLS-FM in New York, which influenced many urban radio stations today. He worked as a DJ and Program Director for WBLS-FM and WRKS-FM during the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Death and Legacy

Frankie Crocker passed away on October 21, 2000, in Miami, Florida, due to pancreatic cancer. He was remembered as a significant figure in broadcasting, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2000, and the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His legacy continues to influence urban radio formats across the country.
