Frankie Howerd was an English actor and comedian who is best known for his roles in “Carry On Doctor,” “Up Pompeii,” and “The Ladykillers.” His unique style combined humor with a distinctive stammer, which became a hallmark of his performances.

Born Francis Alick Howard on March 6, 1917, in York, England, Frankie had a challenging childhood. He started performing on stage at age four and later pursued a career in comedy after realizing that acting wasn’t his strength. His long-term partner and manager was Dennis Heymer, whom he met in 1955 and remained with until his death.

Career

Frankie’s career began in music halls, where he created revues filled with jokes and comic songs. Despite battling severe stage fright, he found success on radio and television in the 1950s and 1960s. He gained significant acclaim for his role in the musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and the satire series “That Was the Week That Was,” although he struggled with depression and self-doubt throughout his life.

Death and Legacy

Frankie Howerd passed away on April 19, 1992, due to heart failure after being hospitalized for respiratory issues. He was buried at St. Gregory’s Church in Weare, Somerset. Frankie is remembered for his unique comedic style and contributions to British entertainment, influencing future generations of comedians.
