Fred Stone was born Fred Andrew Stone on August 19, 1873, in Longmont, Colorado. He married actress Allene Crater in 1904, and they had three children together: Dorothy, Carol, and Paula. His family continued his legacy in the performing arts, with his daughters also becoming actresses. He was the uncle of Milburn Stone, who is famous for playing “Doc” Adams on the television show Gunsmoke.
Career
Fred’s career began at a young age when he joined a traveling circus after running away from home at 11. He gained fame as the Scarecrow in the musical version of The Wizard of Oz from 1903 to 1911, performing alongside David Craig Montgomery. After Montgomery’s death in 1917, Fred continued to perform both on stage and in films, with notable movies including Alice Adams and The Westerner.
