Born William Frederick Clayton Storey on June 20, 1861, in London, England, he was the son of William Fitch Storey and Edith da Costa. Fred was married to Flora Bessie Constance Clitherow and also to Lilian Margaret Thorley Holmes, who was also an actress. He had one child with Lilian.
