Personal and Family Life

Fredi Washington was born as Fredericka Carolyn Washington and was part of a family that valued the arts. She had a sister, Isabel, who was married to civil rights leader Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Washington had two husbands: Lawrence Brown, a musician she divorced in 1951, and Dr. Hugh Anthony Bell, whom she married in 1952 and remained with until his death in 1970. She later worked at Bloomingdale’s in Stamford from 1954 to 1980.

Career

Fredi Washington was a pioneering African-American actress who faced challenges due to her fair skin and green eyes, which often overshadowed her talent. Despite being pushed to “pass” for white by Hollywood studios, she refused and instead made a name for herself with powerful performances. Notably, her memorable role as Peola in “Imitation of Life” showcased her acting ability, but she often struggled to find roles because of her looks, which many felt did not align with typical portrayals of Black women in film.

Fredi Washington passed away on June 28, 1994, in Stamford, Connecticut, due to a stroke. Her legacy includes not only her contributions to film and theater but also her role as an activist for African-American performers through her leadership in the Negro Actors Guild.
